Watch Twitter bans advertising that conflicts with science on climate change

Twitter says it will no longer allow advertisers on their side to deny scientifically agreeing to climate change, a policy Google already echoes.

Advertising should not deter important conversations about the online crisis, the company said in a statement on Friday, outlining its new policy.

There was no indication that the change would affect what users would post on social media, which has been targeted by the group for promoting misleading information about climate change with Facebook.

The announcement comes just hours before the European Union agreed to a deal that would require major technology companies to closely monitor their sites for misleading and other harmful content.

Twitter says users will provide more information on how it plans to provide reliable, authoritative teaching on climate change conversations, including a self-governing panel on climate change.

The company already has a dedicated climate issue on its site and described it as “pre-bunks” at last year’s UN climate conference to combat misinformation surrounding the issue.
